Abbott Laboratories Fund Awards Summer Research Fellowships to Biomedical Research Students

ABBOTT PARK, Ill. -- The Abbott Laboratories Fund recently awarded $26,000 in research fellowships to top undergraduate students from across the country pursuing careers in biomedical research.

Abbott presented each of the six recipients with a $4,000 Abbott Fund Fellowship Award toward their participation in the Mayo Clinic Summer Undergraduate Research Program. The summer research program gives undergraduate students an opportunity to build their skills as scientists by working on 'real world' research projects in collaboration with internationally known scientists. With close to 200 research physicians and scientists on staff, Mayo Clinic is internationally recognized for its investigative programs in basic science and clinical research.

This year's Abbott fellowship winners are: Lindsey Evans, Oakwood College, Huntsville, Ala.; Steve Harris, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn.; Sandeep Kishore, Duke University, Durham, N.C.; Mambidzeni Madzivire, Smith College, Northhampton, Mass.; Carrie Marston, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Okla.; and Michael Quigley, Eckerd College, St. Petersburg, Fla.

"We're pleased to honor these students for their outstanding accomplishments and to encourage their future careers in medical research," said Sue Widner, president, Abbott HealthSystems Division.

A supporter of the Mayo program since 1993, the Abbott Laboratories Fund, Abbott's philanthropic arm, has granted close to $250,000 in research fellowships to more than 50 students from across the country.

The Abbott Laboratories Fund is a U.S. 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit organization, primarily funded by Abbott Laboratories.
