An ICT reader in Texas asks, “Can Pakistan disposable instruments be re-sterilized after use?  If so, how many times can they be sterilized?”

Michele DeMeo, sterile processing manager at Memorial Hospital in York, Pa., provides the following answer: “Anything labeled as ‘single-use’ must be used as single use.  The only exception is if your facility uses an FDA-approved, third-party re-processor that has obtained clearance to reprocess particular devices. Pakistan instruments are often not surgical-grade stainless steel and hence, not usually appropriate for surgical use. They are a perfect alternative to non-invasive procedures done on a nursing floor, in some circumstances when an economy line of instrument is suitable. However, there are different grades of Pakistan instruments. Some are disposable and some are not. Some may be able to be reprocessed. The only way to know for sure is to contact the manufacturer and ask. If they can be, you must follow the manufacturer's specific instructions. As for the number of times, this will be dependent on a number of factors including, but not limited to: Can it be reprocessed at? What is the condition of it after use?  (Is there rust, pitting, other compromising defects?) It is imperative to contact the manufacturer of your instruments to verify if there are disposable or if they can be reprocessed and by what parameters.”
