American Medical News is reporting on two physicians, Dr. Arun Mathews and Dr. Francis Kong, who have turned their appreciation for infection control into a promising new venture, Nerdcore Learning, a gaming company that targets medical students and delivers a powerful message about antibiotic stewardship through its role-playing game, “The Healing Blade.”  The game, which blends fantasy and science fiction with medical instruction, features a fantasy world of sorcerers, villains and heroines, including characters called The Apothecary Healers, named after real-world antibiotics, and The Lords of Pestilence, named after bacteria such as Clostridium difficile.
