Study: 20% of Approved Drugs Unsafe

A new Harvard study suggests that 20 percent of all Food and Drug Administration approved drugs are actually unsafe.

Dr. Karen Lasser of Cambridge Hospital and Harvard Medical School reports in this week's Journal of the American Medical Association that after analyzing more than 548 drugs that received approval between 1975 to 1999, one in five was later taken off the market because of a serious side effect.

The researchers concluded that physicians should consider prescribing older drugs to ensure their patient's health.
