McGAW PARK, Ill. -- Cardinal Health, Inc., a leading provider of products and services supporting the healthcare industry, announced today it is building a 350,000- square-foot distribution center to support more than 300 healthcare providers in the greater Chesapeake region, including Maryland, Va., Washington, D.C. and southern central Pennsylvania. This facility, which will serve as a regional center for the distribution of medical, surgical and laboratory supplies, is expected to be operational later this year.
Cardinal Health is the one of the country's largest distributors of medical, surgical and laboratory products and services. The company has 49 medical, surgical and laboratory distribution facilities across the country.
"The new distribution center will bring our nearby operations together into a single, automated center, which will enhance our ability to service customers in greater Chesapeake, an area of tremendous growth for us," said Tom Burke, president of Cardinal Health's Northeast Region. "We chose this particular location because of its proximity to both our customer base and employees."
The 350,000-square-foot distribution facility will feature an automated tote storage and retrieval system. This advanced technology assures the highest levels of throughput, picking accuracy and order completion providing customers greater consistency, reliability and fill rates. There is additional room for future expansion. Through the use of technology and automation, the facility will be very flexible and capable of supporting customers that require small unit orders, such as ambulatory care facilities and customers who receive products on a just in time basis.
