Organ Distribution Authority Moves to Senate

Compromise in the Works

WASHINGTON, DC-The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee passed a bill yesterday giving the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) decision-making authority concerning the distribution of organs for transplant and established a process for resolving disputes between the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and UNOS. The bill is a compromise between existing legislation giving sole distributing authority to the HHS and a bill passed in the House last week giving that authority to UNOS.
