This presentation will address the impact that environmental contamination has on healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Approaches to optimizing cleaning processes, including the use of DAZO® fluorescent marking gel, will be discussed.

Philip C. Carling, M.D., Director Infectious Diseases Division, Carney Hospital

Dr. Carling is the Director of Infectious Diseases and Hospital Epidemiology at Carney Hospital in the Dorchester area of Boston. He teaches and is involved in clinical research at Boston University School of Medicine where he is a professor of Clinical Medicine. In the past his research has related primarily to developing epidemiologically grounded computerized tools for analyzing antibiotic use in acute care hospitals and developing ways in which the clinical and economic impact of active antibiotic management programs can be quantified to enhance patient care and decrease incidence of resistant bacterial infections. Currently his research activities relate to developing methodologies and process improvement programs to evaluate and enhance patient area cleaning and disinfection in hospitals and other settings.
