IRVINE, Calif. -- Martin S. Favero, PhD, director of scientific and clinical affairs for Irvine-based Advanced Sterilization Products, a Johnson & Johnson company, has been selected to be the keynote speaker at the May 12 commencement ceremonies for graduate students at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash.
Favero, an expert in infection control and sterilization sciences, worked at the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention in the hospital infections program. He is also scheduled to receive an honorary doctor of laws degree. The ceremonies will begin at 5 p.m. in the
In bestowing the honorary degree, Gonzaga will be honoring one of its own. Favero graduated cum laude with a bachelors of science degree in the class of 1959.
In comments prepared for the commencement, Father Robert J. Spitzer, S.J., Gonzaga University president, praised Favero for his contribution to humanity. He took classes in logic, metaphysics, philosophy of human nature, ethics, and social ethics. In these classes, he learned to defend the dignity of the human person. In the sciences, he excelled in microbiology, chemistry, biology and physics. In these classes, he learned the craft of research and the skills necessary to advance in his discipline, Spitzer said. By integrating these two paths identified by Ignatius of Loyola, he continued a Jesuit tradition of education begun 450 years ago. This tradition, since its very foundation, has nourished scientists and scholars who have worked for the good of humanity.
