LAS VEGAS -- Skinvisible, Inc. announces that its wholly owned subsidiary, Skinvisible Pharmaceuticals, Inc. has reached an agreement with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), to supply its athletic department with its patented antimicrobial skin sanitizer lotion to help prevent the spread of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a skin-infection bacteria that is increasingly affecting athletes.
UNLV is the first college athletic facility to use the Skinvisible product, making it available to approximately 500 student athletes who train and compete at the university on a daily basis.
"We are very pleased to have been introduced to this new product," says UNLV Athletic Trainer Kyle Wilson. "We feel it is important to take a proactive approach in the prevention to the spread of infectious germs, including MRSA, amongst our student athletes. We're confident that this product can help us achieve that goal."
"Independent studies conclude that the Skinvisible skin sanitizer, which is formulated with Triclosan as the active ingredient, demonstrates a superior bacteriostatic and/or bactericidal effect against a broad spectrum of test pathogens, including MRSA," reports Dr. James Roszell, head chemist at Skinvisible. "When topically applied, independent studies verify that this lotion delivers a continuous, long-term bacterial kill of up to 99.9 percent for up to four hours per application, which is undiminished by hand washing or perspiration."
In a recent USA Today article, reporter Gary Mihoces notes several cases of MRSA among high school, college and professional sports teams. In September 2003, several members of the NFL's Miami Dolphins were infected by MRSA. As well, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that a fencing club in Colorado, a college football team in Pennsylvania and a number of high school wrestlers in Indiana, have recently been hit by MRSA. The report concludes that the spread of MRSA is a growing concern among the general population.
"Skinvisible is proud to have UNLV be the first to offer our product to their student athletes and we look forward to introducing our product to other schools and athletic organizations across the country," says Terry Howlett, CEO of Skinvisible, Inc.
