B. Braun Medical Inc. (B. Braun) will attend INS 2012 with its latest development in safety-engineered medical devices, the Introcan Safety® 3 Closed IV Catheter. The new product includes the proven passive protection from needlestick injuries that has made B. Braun the U.S. leader in passive safety-engineered IV catheters.Â
Advancements in the new Introcan Safety® 3s design include the unique multi-access blood control septum to protect healthcare professionals from blood exposure and an integrated stabilization platform that helps to improve catheter stability and minimize movement within the vessel.
Recent research (see footnote) confirms passive safety engineered devices are most effective for needlestick injury prevention, says Tom Sutton, vice president of vascular access and IV systems for B. Braun Medical Inc. The Introcan Safety® 3 is designed to provide clinicians with not only an effective passive needlestick safety device, but also an added layer of safety and control with a bidirectional blood control septum to aid in the prevention of blood exposure each time the device is accessed.
The company will also host two Exhibitor Theater Sessions featuring Lynn Hadaway, MEd, RN, BC, CRNI, discussing Mucocutaneous Blood Exposure and Peripheral Catheters, Acknowledging the Risk, Documenting Occurrences. With more than 35 years of experience in infusion nursing and adult education, Hadaways expertise has been published on topics ranging from vascular access devices, anatomy and physiology, to infusion therapy and vascular access complication management. She is a champion for advanced practices and devices that protect healthcare professionals and patients. Sutton will follow Hadaways presentation to discuss New Product Technology from B. Braun. Â
Sutton says conferences like INS 2012 are important. Members of INS are committed advocates that influence change to improve patient care, Sutton says. We hope that the clinicians who visit our booth and Exhibitor Theater events will return to their individual care settings with valuable information that increases safety and positive patient outcomes. Presentations will be on Monday, April 30 at Exhibitor Theater A (Rio Pavilion, 200 Aisle) and at Exhibitor Theater B (Rio Pavilion, 600 Aisle) on Tuesday May 1. Both Exhibitor Theater sessions will run from 11:10 a.m. until noon. B. Brauns line of peripheral IV catheters, infusion systems, luers, stopcocks, accessory and kits will be demonstrated at Booth 315.

Reducing Hidden Risks: Why Sharps Injuries Still Go Unreported
July 18th 2025Despite being a well-known occupational hazard, sharps injuries continue to occur in health care facilities and are often underreported, underestimated, and inadequately addressed. A recent interview with sharps safety advocate Amanda Heitman, BSN, RN, CNOR, a perioperative educational consultant, reveals why change is overdue and what new tools and guidance can help.
New Study Explores Oral Vancomycin to Prevent C difficile Recurrence, But Questions Remain
July 17th 2025A new clinical trial explores the use of low-dose oral vancomycin to prevent Clostridioides difficile recurrence in high-risk patients taking antibiotics. While the data suggest a possible benefit, the findings stop short of statistical significance and raise red flags about vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE), underscoring the delicate balance between prevention and antimicrobial stewardship.
What Lies Beneath: Why Borescopes Are Essential for Verifying Surgical Instrument Cleanliness
July 16th 2025Despite their smooth, polished exteriors, surgical instruments often harbor dangerous contaminants deep inside their lumens. At the HSPA25 and APIC25 conferences, Cori L. Ofstead, MSPH, and her colleagues revealed why borescopes are an indispensable tool for sterile processing teams, offering the only reliable way to verify internal cleanliness and improve sterile processing effectiveness to prevent patient harm.
