Cardinal Health Highlights Nurse Education, Community Connections at AORN Conference

Cardinal Health will highlight ongoing education and training at the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Surgical Conference & Expo in Chicago March 30 through April 2.

The company will host three continuing education (CE) activities focused on safety and efficiency in the operating room. Each course, approved for two CE credits, is sponsored by Pfiedler Enterprises. The following courses will be offered in the Cardinal Health CE theater at booth #2812:
 
Principles of Bone Cement and the Process of Bone Cement Mixing
Good quality cement is essential for long-term implant survival, reducing the rate of loosening and increasing the long-term survival of the prosthesis. This continuing education activity will provide a review of key concepts regarding composition, properties  and types of bone cements and factors that affect bone cement polymerization. The course will also describe the evolution of mixing and application techniques, potential hazards posed by bone cement, and safety considerations for patients and members of the surgical team.
 
Effective Operating Room Inventory Management
This continuing education activity will provide the perioperative nurse with information on ways to improve inventory management in the operating room. It will review the challenges and opportunities associated with effective supply management, and provide specific strategies on product standardization, inventory management and reduction, reduction of waste, data analysis and improved physician preference card management.
 
Hair Removal: Evidence-based practice
The incidence of surgical site infections (SSIs) is influenced by several risk factors, one of which is preoperative hair removal. This continuing education activity will present an overview of the clinical and economic impact of SSIs in today’s healthcare environment, outline the evolution of the practice of preoperative hair removal, and discuss clinical issues related to hair removal, including the timing and various methods.
 
Aside from CEs, the Cardinal Health booth will also have a donation station and interactive photo booth to raise funds for Wounded Warrior Project®. At the booth, nurses will have the opportunity to use white boards and pre-prepared signage to complete the phrase, “Together we….”  as they have their photos taken. Cardinal Health will donate $5 to Wounded Warrior Project on behalf of each attendee visiting the photo booth. Wounded Warrior Project will be providing wrist bands and pins to donors.
 
As part of their booth experience, nurses can also learn more about Cardinal Health surgical solutions by participating in activities including:
- A lightboard demo to demonstrate the durability of sterilization wraps
- A bone cement mixing simulation including frosting and cupcakes
- A surgical clipping demo on hair mats
- The opportunity to don surgical gloves or fit them to hand molds
- A live demo of the company’s online tool that provides real-time information on a facility’s procedure pack program, including virtual images, inventory status and opportunities for standardization and cost savings.
