Joint Commission Resources Releases Free Guide for Healthcare Providers to Improve Bedside Care
Joint Commission Resources (JCR) has released a new, free guide to help front-line healthcare providers implement high quality and safe care at the bedside. The guide, produced by the JCR Hospital Engagement Network (HEN), is part of the federal Partnership for Patients (PFP) initiative to improve the quality, safety and affordability of healthcare for all Americans.
Titled Beyond the Bundles: How to Implement Best Practices at the Bedside, the 27-page guide is intended to motivate healthcare providers with known best practice bundles and operational tips for successful and consistent implementation to help reduce patient harm at the bedside. The guide also incorporates innovative strategies JCR has learned from working with hospitals across the country.Â
Healthcare providers can use the guide to assess gaps in their own organizational practice, engage key influencers for change, set goals for targeted improvement, implement proven safe practices, and reinforce key behaviors to ensure high reliability and sustainable performance. In addition, they can obtain how to information and tips for successful implementation of known best practice components as well as links to related resources developed by other organizations. Â

The guide covers a variety of important topics including adverse drug events, catheter associated urinary tract infection, central line associated blood stream infection, early elective delivery, injuries from falls and immobility, pressure ulcers, surgical site infection, ventilator associated pneumonia, and venous thromboembolism. In addition, it includes an overview on how to use performance improvement methodology for sustainable results as well as how to reduce readmission cases.
The bedside guide, available for download, complements the JCR HEN publication, Hospital Executive and Physician Leadership Execution Strategies, which offers specific approaches that leaders and physicians can use to demonstrate their support and participation in reducing harm to patients.
