The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) will offer the webinar, "Using Rigid Sterilization Containers in the Healthcare Setting," on Wednesday, July 24, 2013, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. ET.
Rigid sterilization containers for surgical instruments have been available in the United States for nearly three decades. In more recent years, rigid sterilization containers along with containment devices have become a staple in central service departments. With their ability to provide cost-effective, reusable, rigid packaging for sterilization processing, storage, transportation, and presentation of surgical instruments and other medical devices, these containers are true workhorses at any hospital. Thus, rigid sterilization containers and containment devices are a very important part of the patient safety and cost-control equations.
Â
With such widespread use comes a concern over their ability to perform as needed. A new update to the AAMI standard, Containment devices for reusable medical device sterilization, 2nd ed. (ANSI/AAMI ST77:2013), was recently published. The standard serves as a guide to device manufacturers of rigid sterilization containers and containment devices. As a standard for manufacturers, the update provides reference information for ST79 as well as providing a standard for manufacturers of rigid sterilization containers and containment devices.
Â
This webinar will cover best practices when using rigid sterilization containers based on ST79, and will provide insight into the new ST77 that manufacturers will use when testing rigid sterilization containers.
Â
The program will:
- List requirements manufacturers must meet for device testing.
- Discuss critical assessment criteria for device integration in rigid sterilization containers.
- Outline routine best practices for rigid sterilization containers in the healthcare setting.
Â
Speakers are Damien S. Berg BA, BS, CRCST, manager of sterile processing at Medical Center of the Rockies, and Joan M. Spear, MBA, RN, CNOR, CRCST, group director of clinical services for Aesculap, Inc.
Â
CBSPD and IAHCSMM are offering contact hours for this webinar. Contact Emilee Hughes at ehughes@aami.org to obtain a letter of attendance needed to receive the contact hours from CBSPD and IAHCSMM.
Â
The cost is  $79 per registration for AAMI members and $99 per registration for non-members. Â

Reducing Hidden Risks: Why Sharps Injuries Still Go Unreported
July 18th 2025Despite being a well-known occupational hazard, sharps injuries continue to occur in health care facilities and are often underreported, underestimated, and inadequately addressed. A recent interview with sharps safety advocate Amanda Heitman, BSN, RN, CNOR, a perioperative educational consultant, reveals why change is overdue and what new tools and guidance can help.
What Lies Beneath: Why Borescopes Are Essential for Verifying Surgical Instrument Cleanliness
July 16th 2025Despite their smooth, polished exteriors, surgical instruments often harbor dangerous contaminants deep inside their lumens. At the HSPA25 and APIC25 conferences, Cori L. Ofstead, MSPH, and her colleagues revealed why borescopes are an indispensable tool for sterile processing teams, offering the only reliable way to verify internal cleanliness and improve sterile processing effectiveness to prevent patient harm.
