The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) announces that the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has honored AAMI's senior vice president of standards policy and programs for her “leadership and dedication” in both the domestic and international standards systems. ANSI will bestow a Meritorious Service Award to Carol Herman at a September ceremony in Washington, D.C., held in conjunction with World Standards Week.
“You have been selected to receive this award by the Board of Directors Awards Committee in recognition of your many contributions to the ANSI Federation and the voluntary standardization community,” wrote Kevan Lawlor, chair of the ANSI board of directors, in a letter to Herman. In her role at AAMI, Herman manages the Standards Department, which produces scores of voluntary standards, recommended practices, and technical information reports for the medical device and healthcare technology communities every year.
Standards play a crucial role in helping to bring safe and effective medical devices to market. Developed by an impressive array of stakeholders and experts-and in consultation with federal regulators, most notably the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-standards provide medical device manufacturers with guidance to help them understand good practices and regulatory expectations. They seek to harmonize marketplace, regulatory, and other requirements to enhance the use of healthcare technology for the benefit of patients.
“I’m delighted to receive this award because it underscores the value of voluntary, consensus-based standards in the fast-changing world of healthcare technology,” says Herman. “Now, more than ever, it’s important that the experts in the field come together to agree on good practices that support both innovation and patient safety. This award is a testament to the hard work and skills of both the AAMI staff in the Standards Department and the countless volunteers we work with who bring their passion, dedication, and intelligence to the development of each and every standard.”
Herman joined AAMI in 2012. Prior to that she was director of the standards program at the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health.
“Carol has been respected and recognized in the AAMI standards community for many years for her contributions to the AAMI standards program,” says AAMI president Mary Logan. “What makes this award so special is the acknowledgement of Carol’s contributions to the greater standards community beyond AAMI. She is a highly respected leader at ANSI, and it’s great to see this broader recognition of her contributions to the field.”
Herman will be feted with 20 other honorees at the 2015 ANSI Leadership and Service Awards ceremony the evening of Sept. 30 at the Fairmont Hotel in Washington, D.C.
