The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) will hold a free online demonstration of its benchmarking program for sterile processing departments on Monday, June 17, at 2 p.m. EST. The web event is open to all interested parties.
The program, called Benchmarking SolutionsSterile Processing, is designed to help departments compare their sterilization practices, financial and personnel needs, and operational policies with departments at other facilities. To register, CLICK HERE by Friday, May 31.
The demo follows on the heels of the announcement of a new partnership between AAMI and the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM) designed to enhance and promote the web-based benchmarking resource.
AAMI launched the benchmarking program nearly two years ago. By collaborating with IAHCSMM, the program promises to be an even more effective and robust tool, as the two organizations have a combined membership of more than 26,000.The combination will help attract more subscribers and generate more useful benchmarking data.
The resource features more than 130 benchmarking and best practice measurements. It displays data in an easy-to-read percentile format and offers charts and graphs to show results.
Developed by leading sterile processing experts, the benchmarking survey examines critical elements of a sterile processing program, such as:
- Budgeting and financial issues
- Sterilization practices
- Regulatory and standards compliance
- Volume and types of work performed
- Clinical relationships
- Best practices and performance improvement
- Responsibilities and reporting structures
- Staffing, qualifications and continuing education
Benchmarking SolutionsSterile Processing was created in collaboration with software developer Dynamic Benchmarking.
Members of AAMI or IAHCSMM will receive special discounts on annual subscriptions to the benchmarking program. Individuals can take advantage of those discounts by visiting the AAMI Store or calling 877-249-8226.

The Green Revolution in SPD: From Hidden Cost to Frontline Change
August 6th 2025As climate change accelerates, health care’s environmental impact faces increased scrutiny, with sterile processing departments (SPDs) emerging as key change agents. Often behind the scenes, SPD professionals can lead sustainability by turning routine practices into ecofriendly protocols that protect both patient and planetary health.
Flawed From the Start: Why Many IFUs for Surgical Instruments Fail in Real-World Sterile Processing
August 6th 2025At the 2025 HSPA Annual Conference & Expo, Cori L. Ofstead, MSPH, highlighted critical flaws in manufacturers’ instructions for use (IFUs) for orthopedic and neurosurgical instruments. From contradictory directions to unrealistic cleaning expectations, these IFUs often fail under real-world conditions, jeopardizing both patient safety and sterile processing workflows.
Breaking the Cycle of Silence: Why Sharps Injuries Go Unreported and What Can Be Done
August 6th 2025Despite decades of progress in health care safety, a quiet but dangerous culture still lingers: many health care workers remain afraid to report sharps injuries, fearing blame more than the wound itself.
Reducing Hidden Risks: Why Sharps Injuries Still Go Unreported
August 6th 2025Despite being a well-known occupational hazard, sharps injuries continue to occur in health care facilities and are often underreported, underestimated, and inadequately addressed. A recent interview with sharps safety advocate Amanda Heitman, BSN, RN, CNOR, a perioperative educational consultant, reveals why change is overdue and what new tools and guidance can help.
What Lies Beneath: Why Borescopes Are Essential for Verifying Surgical Instrument Cleanliness
August 6th 2025Despite their smooth, polished exteriors, surgical instruments often harbor dangerous contaminants deep inside their lumens. At the HSPA25 and APIC25 conferences, Cori L. Ofstead, MSPH, and her colleagues revealed why borescopes are an indispensable tool for sterile processing teams, offering the only reliable way to verify internal cleanliness and improve sterile processing effectiveness to prevent patient harm.
