Article

The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) will offer the webinar, Future Direction of HFE in Medical Device Development, on Dec. 16, 2015, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET. This webinar is designed for professionals in multiple disciplines who are either directly or indirectly responsible for applying human factors engineering in the development of safe, effective medical devices.

This presentation will consider how trends in industrial, scientific, business, and consumer product and development might drive the design of future medical products. During this webinar, the panel of presenters will anticipate the future of user experiences with medical devices. They will view the future through lenses shaped by their years of human factors and industrial design practices. Their presentation will consider how trends in industrial, scientific, business, and consumer product and development might drive the design of future medical products. They will share their vision of how the continued application of human factors engineering and industrial design will lead to more safe, effective, and satisfying medical devices. Also, they will reflect on how regulators have effectively driven the medical industry to improve user experiences with medical devices and the influence that political and technological change might have on continued progress.

The webinar moderator is Michael Wiklund, general manager of human factors engineering for UL-Wiklund R&D. Members of the discussion panel are:

•David Barash, executive director, Global Health Portfolio and Chief Medical Officer, GE Foundation
•Terry Fairbanks, director, National Center for Human Factors in Healthcare, MedStar Health
•Julian Goldman, director, Medical Device Interoperability Program, Massachusetts General Hospital
•Stuart Karten, founder and president, Karten Design
•Jonathan Kendler, design director, UL-Wiklund R&D
