New CDC Chief Announced

ATLANTA - Dr. Julie Geberding, an anthrax expert, has been named as the new director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Geberding, 46, is an infectious-disease specialist who has made her mark within the scientific community. She was adamant about protecting healthcare workers from the AIDS virus before officials understand the disease's methods of transmission and has been vocal in the government's battle against future anthrax attacks.

She is the first female to have the job, which was vacated by director Jeffrey Koplan in March.
