Safety-Engineered Products and Best Practices Featured in B. Braun-Sponsored Breakfast Symposia

May 30, 2012
Article

At this year's APIC annual meeting, B. Braun Medical Inc. will display a range of safety-engineered devices designed to advance protection from infection in the healthcare setting for both patients and healthcare workers.

The companys new Introcan Safety® 3 Closed IV Catheter will be in the spotlight, directly addressing issues pertaining to exposure to bloodborne pathogens and catheter-related complications. Like B. Brauns existing Introcan Safety IV Catheter, the next generation Introcan Safety 3 includes passive safety protection from needlestick injuries, with the addition of an innovative multi-access blood control septum to aid in the prevention of blood exposure each time the device is accessed. An integrated stabilization platform is designed to improve catheter stability and minimize movement in the vein, which could help reduce catheter-related complications. Introcan Safety 3 Closed IV Catheter will be available for widespread distribution in July 2012.

Other safety innovations to be displayed include the CARESITE® needleless connector and ULTRAPORT zerO 4-way stopcock, both designed to reduce potential for contamination, improve patient care and increase clinician convenience. The broad line of B. Braun peripheral IV catheters, infusion systems, needleless connectors, stopcocks, and accessory kits that focus on safety in the healthcare setting will be demonstrated at Booth 501.

B. Braun is committed to providing products that address the critical issues of infection prevention and healthcare worker and patient safety. Our new Introcan Safety 3 Closed IV Catheter is the latest example of B. Brauns continuous efforts to expand our product offering with designs intended to protect both clinicians and patients from healthcare acquired infections, says Tom Sutton, B. Brauns vice president of marketing for vascular access and IV systems. Sharing our knowledge and expertise of products and best practice is the most important thing we can do at APIC for clinicians, infection control professionals and administrators.

B. Braun is hosting two Satellite Education symposia during APIC 2012 that focus on increased infection control and safety in the healthcare setting. On Monday, June 4, 2012 from 6 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. the subject of Intraoperative Infection Control: A Paradigm Shift will be presented by Dr.  Randy W. Loftus, MD, assistant professor of anesthesiology at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Dr. Matthew D. Koff, MD, MS, assistant professor of anesthesiology at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, at the San Antonio Convention Center, Room 006 A & B.

Lynn Hadaway, M.Ed, RN, BC, CRNI will be featured in a symposium titled Mucocutaneous Blood Exposure and Peripheral Catheters Acknowledging the Risk, Documenting Occurrences on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 from 6 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. at the San Antonio Convention Center, Room 008.  Hadaway, the president of Lynn Hadaway Associate, Inc., and more than 35 years of experience in infusion nursing and adult education will be followed by a presentation on new product technology by B. Brauns Tom Sutton.  A continental breakfast will be served to attendees of both symposia.
