New evidence-based recommendations released from the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) and the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA)  recognize the clinical efficacy of alcohol-based hand wipes and their added benefit as “a convenient option for bed-bound patients, first responders and others who cannot easily get to sinks or wall-mounted dispensers.” The guideline, “Strategies to Prevent Healthcare-Associated Infections through Hand Hygiene,” was featured in the September 2014 issue of the journal Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology.
