Atlanta, Ga--The 4th Decennial International Conference on Nosocomial and Healthcare-Associated Infections will be held in Atlanta, March 5-9, 2000. Sponsored by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and cosponsored by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), National Foundation of Infectious Diseases (NFID), and the Society for Hospital Epidemiology of America (SHEA), the conference will occur in conjunction with SHEA's 10th Annual Meeting.

According to the preliminary program, Sunday topics will include "Healthcare-associated Infection: A Public Health Priority," "Prevention is Primary: Bloodstream Infections," "Beyond 2000" and the annual SHEA lecture. State-of-the-art sessions will be offered Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday and will cover topics such as, "Water Quality and Healthcare-associated Infections," "Practicing Cost-effective Infection Control," and "Laboratory Detection of Antimicrobial Resistance." Prevention in Primary topics will include "Building Infection Control Capacity in Long-term Care" and "Planning for Disasters." Reality Check sessions on Wednesday will cover "Does VRE Isolation Work?," "Can Infections in Home Health Care Be Monitored and Do They Matter?," "BCG or not BCG?," and "Who Should NOT Receive PEP after a Needlestick?" The conference will wrap up on Thursday with a panel on Healthcare Epidemiology in the New Millennium.
