APIC Elects New Leadership

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) has elected seven new officers to its board of directors, including a president-elect and secretary.

Denise M. Murphy, RN, BSN, MPH, CIC, has been elected to the position of president-elect, a post she will hold until January 2007. Murphy is the chief patient safety and quality officer for Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH) in St. Louis. Prior to taking her hospital position she spent seven years as the director of healthcare epidemiology and patient safety for BJC HealthCare. She attended nursing school in Philadelphia and later received her BSN in Portland, Maine before earning her masters degree in public health from the St. Louis University School of Public Health.

In addition to this national APIC position, Murphy is a past president of the APIC Greater St. Louis Chapter and has served four years on the APIC board of directors. 

Elected to a second term of secretary to APIC is Patricia (Patti) S. Grant, RN, BSN, MS, CIC, director of infection control and epidemiology at RHD Memorial Medical Center in Dallas. Grants 15-year career as an infection prevention and control professional follows six years of nursing management. As a member of APICs Dallas-Fort Worth chapter, she has contributed to many committees while holding positions of historian, secretary, board member, and chair of the program and government advisory committees.  At the APIC state level, Grant contributed five years on the board of directors, and was the 1999 president for the Texas Society of Infection Control Practitioners.

The following APIC members were elected to APICs board as first-term directors:

-- Cathryn L. Murphy, RN, MPH, PhD, CIC, associate professor, Bond University Health Services and Medicine, Australia

Elected as returning directors to APIC board are:

-- Mary L. Andrus BA, RN, CIC, nurse epidemiologist, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta

-- Gail E. Harris, RN, MS, MA, CIC, CPHRM, senior associate, McManis-Monsalve Associates, Manassas, Va.

-- Patricia Rosenbaum, RNC, CIC, associate director of hospital epidemiology and infection control, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore
