APIC Members Elect 2007 Leadership

Two veteran infection prevention and control professionals (ICPs) have been elected to top APIC leadership positions. In addition, APIC members elected five directors and three nominating and awards committee members. 

Janet Frain, RN, CIC, CPHQ, CPHRM, is APIC's new president-elect, a position she will hold until January 2008, at which time she will become president. Frain has more than 30 years of infection prevention experience and nearly 20 years with the association. Most recently she held the position of APIC treasurer. Frain is the director of quality, risk, infection prevention and control and medical staff services at Sutter Medical Center in Sacramento, Calif. Frain has served on APIC's board as a director, as well as two terms as secretary and two terms as treasurer. She also held key positions within the APIC Sierra Chapter prior to joining the APIC board.

James Marx, RN, MS, CIC, NHA, has been elected APIC treasurer. He is an accomplished infection prevention and control professional with more than 17 years of experience. Marx has been very active in APIC, including serving as a director on its Board. He is the founder of Broad Street Solutions, a consulting business that promotes the science and art of infection prevention and control in acute care hospitals, long-term care facilities and other health organizations.

The following directors have been elected to two-year terms, effective January 2007:

-- Ruth Carrico, PhD, RN, CIC, assistant professor, University of Louisville School of Public Health and Information Sciences, Louisville, Ky.

-- Michelle Farber, RN, CIC, infection control specialist, Mercy-Unity Community Hospital, Coon Rapids, Minn.

-- Shannon Oriola, RN, CIC, COHN, lead infection prevention and control professional,

Sharp Metropolitan Medical Campus, San Diego, Calif.

-- Lillian Burns, MT, MPH, CIC, infection control coordinator for GreenwichHospital, Greenwich, Conn., was reelected to a second term as a director.

-- Joe Whiting, FACHE, will join the board as APIC's first external director, a position created for a non-ICP healthcare expert to create broader stakeholder relationships and bring diversity of healthcare knowledge and expertise to APIC's governance process. Whiting has more than 25 years of experience and a background that includes diverse positions ranging from chief executive officer of a community hospital to director of customer support for a startup software firm. Currently, Whiting heads JKW Consulting.

Eight officers and directors will return to the APIC board of directors in 2007 including:

-- Patricia S. Grant, RN, BSN, MS, CIC: Infection control practitioner, Medical City Dallas, Dallas, Texas

-- Mary L. Andrus, RN, BA, CIC: Nurse epidemiologist, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Ga.

-- Linda J. Burton, RN, BSN, CIC: Infection prevention and control professional, University of Colorado Hospital, Denver, Colo.

-- Gail E. Harris, RN, MS, MA, CIC: Senior risk management consultant, The Medical Protective Company, Las Vegas, Nev.

-- Cathryn L. Murphy, RN, MPH, PhD, CIC: Associate professor, Faculty of Health Science and Medicine, Bond University, West Burleigh, QLD, Australia

-- Patricia A. Rosenbaum, RNC, CIC: ICP/nurse epidemiologist, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Md.

The APIC Nominating and Awards Committee welcomes three new members including:
