H. pylori Infections Common in HIV Patients
WASHINGTON, DC-A new study has found many HIV patients have a common infection form the gram negative microaerophilic organism Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori).
The study, which was conducted in Brazil, looked at 528 HIV-infected patients with epigastric pain. They found H. pylori infections in 38.3% of those patients with a CD4+ cell count greater than 200 cells/mm3 and a 19% rate of infections in those patients with a CD4 count less than 200 cells/mm3.
The researchers were able to theorize that there is a direct correlations between CD4 counts and the H. pylori infections.
