SwabCap is the Focus of Presentations at APIC

Article

Results from the first major clinical study of SwabCap® will be the subject of an oral presentation at the upcoming 39th Annual Educational Conference & International Meeting of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (APIC). The meeting will be held June 4-6 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas.

The talk is by Marc-Oliver Wright, MT (ASCP), MS, CIC, corporate director of infection control for the four-hospital NorthShore University HealthSystem (headquartered in Evanston, IL). The talk will be given June 4 from 1:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.

The presentation, "Preventing Contamination of Central Venous Catheter Valves with the Use of an Alcohol-Based Disinfecting Cap," will indicate that significant reductions in line contamination, organism density, and CLABSIs were observed in patients having central venous catheters during the multi-facility study when the disinfection cap was used.

SwabCap is also the subject of a poster presentation at the conference, "Innovative Additions to Central Line Bundle Reduce Bloodstream Infections in Vulnerable Pediatric Patient Population." The authors of the poster are Marianne Pavia, MT (ASCP), CIC, director of infection control for St. Mary's Healthcare System for Children, in Bayside, N.Y., and Heather Painter, RN, palliative care program manager at St. Mary's.

Excelsior Medical, maker of SwabCap, will be at Booth 226 in the Exhibit Hall during the conference. Among devices displayed at the booth will be:

- SwabFlush, the only saline flush syringe that offers a SwabCap disinfection cap built into the syringe plunger.

 - SwabKIT, an integrated delivery system that packages a SwabCap disinfection cap with a saline flush syringe so that the cap is conveniently available at the point of care.

- SwabPack, which packages 25 SwabCap disinfection caps in a bar-coded plastic bag that can be hung from an IV pole -- another option for making the cap available at the point of care.
