The Food & Drug Administration (FDA)'s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) is soliciting applications for the Director, Division of Epidemiology. CBER is responsible for the safety and efficacy of vaccines, the blood supply and blood products, and cellular, tissue and gene therapies that have a major impact on public health. The Division of Epidemiology provides comprehensive epidemiological service to CBER programs. The Division Director is responsible for planning and conducting surveillance, research and analytical activities using epidemiological strategies to monitor and evaluate the safety and effectiveness of biological products after licensure, reviewing and evaluating these analyses for public health and regulatory significance, and distributing this information within the Center, to the other agencies of the Government, to the medical community, to the public, and internationally. The successful candidate will lead a team of more than 30 physicians, epidemiologists, biostatisticians, and other scientists, as well as interact with leaders in other government agencies, academia, and industry. He or she will represent CBER at national and international meetings, workshops and Agency and Department discussions concerning the post-licensure epidemiologic evaluation of biologic products. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required.
The Division is expanding its activities in analysis of large medical encounter and claims databases and works closely with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Veterans Health Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Department of Defense, and private health care organizations, and is an active participant in the FDAs Sentinel initiative. This expansion provides a unique opportunity to be a leader in the development of an epidemiological surveillance and research program for biologic product safety and effectiveness using these new resources in this high-profile and exciting field.
Qualifications: Eligible individuals must be U.S. citizens. A medical degree from an accredited U.S. medical school (or from a foreign medical school with subsequent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG)), and at least two years of residency training in a medical or preventive medical or other pertinent specialty; plus a Masters degree in Public Health (MPH) or equivalent training in population-based health policy and epidemiologic perspectives is highly desired; or major study in an academic field related to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. Or: a Ph.D. in Epidemiology or a related field with at least two years of subsequent work experience in research or other activities pertinent to product safety surveillance and hypothesis-testing research is highly desired. This position may also be filled by appointment in the U.S. Public Health Service, Commissioned Corps. Physician candidates must possess a valid license to practice medicine in any state in the U.S. Candidates may also be eligible for an excepted service Title 42 appointment.
