Join the IIPW Movement, Oct 14-20, 2012

Article

Creating an infection prevention movement and encouraging broad-scale engagement are the themes of International Infection Prevention Week (IIPW) 2012, which takes place Oct. 14-20, 2012.

Spearheaded by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), IIPW provides a focal point for infection preventionists, healthcare professionals, consumers, organizations, and industry partners to shine a light on infection prevention and its power to save lives. Momentum begins in late August and culminates with daily activities during IIPW, Oct. 14-20, 2012.

IIPW asks everyone to imagine a safer world through infection prevention, says Katrina Crist, APIC CEO. We are seeking to galvanize an infection prevention movement at the grassroots level, and we invite everyone to join with us.

APIC has launched a new website with resources and template materials, and a Facebook page to help hospitals and communities raise awareness and activate around IIPW. The website places special emphasis on the active role consumers can play and outlines three simple steps to engage patients in their care.

Imagine a healthcare setting where everyone performs appropriate hand hygiene before and after touching a patient, said Crist. Imagine a community where every individual uses proper respiratory etiquette by coughing and sneezing into their elbow during cold season. Imagine the impact on a global level. Thats the movement we are creating and the changes that will save lives.

As part of IIPW, local chapters are organizing educational events. Partners and corporate champions are also raising awareness. For more information on how to become involved, visit www.apic.org/iipw.
