SHEA/CDC Healthcare Epidemiology Course to be Held in April

The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA)/CDC Course in Healthcare Epidemiology will be held May 14-17, 2011 at the Sheraton Salt Lake City Hotel in Salt Lake City, Utah. The course provides training for infectious diseases fellows, healthcare epidemiologists, infection preventionists, quality improvment staff, public health officials, and others interested in training and application of epidemiologic principles. The course emphasizes hands-on exercises, practical materials, and case studies supplemented with lectures and seminars covering fundamental aspects of healthcare epidemiology.

The cost is $625 for i ndividual registrants and $450 for SHEA fellows. Registration includes one binder of handouts. SHEA is also offering the presentations, worksheets, and other enduring materials from the course on CD-ROM for a purchase at the meeting. To order a CD, see SHEA staff at the registration desk.

Registration closes Sunday, May 1, 2011 or when the course is full. Seats are limited.

The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. SHEA designates this educational activity for a maximum of 26.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This activity has been submitted to the Virginia Nurses Association for approval to award 23.5 contact hours. The Virginia Nurses Association is accredited as an approver of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

Jonathan Freeman Scholarship

The Jonathan Freeman Scholarship was established by SHEA to promote the training of outstanding infectious disease fellows who demonstrate interest in the field of healthcare epidemiology. SHEA established the scholarship in the memory of Jonathan Freeman, MD, MPH, a teacher and researcher in field of healthcare epidemiology dedicated to improving the delivery of healthcare through the prevention of nosocomial infections. Freeman was a founding faculty member who taught the epidemiology and statistics track of the course for a decade. Up to five Jonathan Freeman Scholarships are awarded at each course. Recipients receive complimentary registration and $500 to defray program expenses. There are five scholarships awarded each year. To apply, submit:

- A letter of no more than one page describing why you would like to have additional training in healthcare epidemiology.

- A letter from your supervisor or a colleague in the field, outlining your qualifications and leadership skills.

 

Gina Pugliese Scholarship

The Gina Pugliese Scholarship was established by SHEA to promote the training of a non-physician infection preventionist (IP) with a minimum of two years experience, who has shown outstanding interest and leadership in the field. SHEA established this scholarship in honor of Gina Pugliese, RN, MS, a prominent infection preventionist and leader in the field of healthcare epidemiology. Pugliese was a founding faculty member of the SHEA/CDC Training Course and co-chair for 15 years. The scholarship recipient receives complimentary registration and a $500 grant to defray program expenses.There are five scholarships awarded each year. To apply, submit:
