Delafield Solutions announces the conclusion of an independent study of a continuous area disinfection system within an active hospital setting. The Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg, Pa. evaluated a novel "no-touch" room disinfection technology licensed by Delafield Solutions.
"It's the most significant discovery that our hospital has ever been a part of," stated the Principal Investigator for the study, Charles K. Herman, MD, Chief Medical Executive and Chair of Surgery at Pocono Medical Center.
At the 42nd annual meeting of the Association of Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), the Pocono Medical Center was awarded the William Rutala Research Award from nearly 300 research abstract submissions. APIC is the nation's largest professional society dedicated to the field of infection control and the Rutala Award, presented annually for the best research abstract, is among the most prestigious awards in the field.
Hospital-acquired infections are a worldwide problem, accounting for more than $30 billion in yearly costs to the United States healthcare system. The historical challenge has been in effectively cleaning and disinfecting occupied spaces in order to reduce pathogens and bacteria to better protect patients, healthcare workers and staff. This problem has become increasingly complex in recent years with the emergence of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). Increasingly, "no-touch" disinfection (NTD) systems hold promise in being an effective addition to standard housekeeping practices for reducing surface contamination in hospitals.
The study at Pocono Medical Center was the first in the nation to be conducted in a hospital and was co-sponsored by Delafield Solutions of Huntsville, Ala. and Lee Antimicrobial Solutions of Armonk, N.Y., of which Delafield Solutions is the sole licensee for use in government and public sector facilities.
