AAMI Offers Webinar Addressing Best Practices in Immediate-Use Steam Sterilization

Article

The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) is offering a webinar, Best Practices in Immediate-Use Steam Sterilization (IUSS), on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. ET.

IUSS has become routine because of surgeon demands, lack of resources such as instruments, equipment, tools, time and planning. All of these affect the ability of the facility to follow medical device manufacturer’s instructions for use and recommended practices. The result is short cuts being taken in the processing of surgical instruments which may not be safe to use on patients. It is time to improve the performance of your IUSS by following best practices and reducing its use. This webinar will discuss the best practices for IUSS including cleaning, packaging and monitoring the process in addition to how to bench mark and reduce its use to only emergent situations.

After attending this webinar, participants will be able to:
•Explain the importance of following evidence based published recommended practices and standards and discuss their relation to patient safety
•Define IUSS and the best practices to follow for its use
•Discuss current published literature on benchmarking and eliminating the use of IUSS to only emergent situations

The speaker is Martha Young, BS, MS, CSPDT, of Martha L. Young, LLC, Providing SAVVY Sterilization Solutions for Healthcare.

Instruction is targeted to any area in hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, or ambulatory health centers (clinics) that product sterile products for their patients.

1.5 CEUs are available from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) and the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM).

The cost is $79 per registration for AAMI members and $99 per registration for non-members.
